Casteldarne/Ehrenburg - Chienes/Kiens

The villages of Chienes and Casteldarne lies upon the river Rienza/Rienz, in the green of meadows and woods which made famous the Pusteria Valley.

Chienes lies at the confluence of the stream Verde/Grun and the Rienza and it is surrounded by fields and meadows, whereas, not far from the village, in a sunny place, at the half of the mountain, it is possible to admire some beautiful maso. In this area, hidden by tall silver firs there is the romantic Schöneck, the castle, nowadays restored, where the poet Oswald von Wolkenstein was born.
Equally romantic is the lake of Issingo/Issing, a little marsh lake in the middle of the wood, a few distance far from the wood.

Casteldarne, on the other side, lies upon the castle hill, and can be reached from Chienes through the "via romana", the ancient Roman route. The castle, Schloss Ehrenburg in German, was built by the earls Künigl, who are still the current owners, in the XVI century at the foot of Mount Grezzo and it represents the main attraction of the village. In 1700, in the baroque period, a square tower and two round ones embellished by Ghibelline battlements. Currently Casteldarne can boast the fact of being one of the very few castle completely furnished open to visitors.
However, before leaving Casteldarne it is worth a visit to the baroque church where an image of the Madonna of Corn is well kept.

In winter, the two villages offer and extraordinary panorama sunny and covered with snow and irresistibly charming, not only for the lovers of winter sports.
In facts, here, besides skiing along the ski run of the skiing area Plan de Corones, you can also make relaxing walks or journeys on sledges dragged by horses, or again you can practise ice-skating, curling, toboggan.
In summer you can "fill up with nature" thanks to the many activities you can do in the open air. Besides wonderful guided excursions and safe-guarded climbs you can also go fishing and swimming, play tennis or golf, go cycling and horse riding.
