The area surrounding Merano and stretching below the Tessa Group in the Valle dell’Adige valley is called Burggrafenamt. This region stands out for its exceptionally mild climate, allowing for the development of a varied landscape, ranging from a typical Mediterranean vegetation to high peaks covered by extended glaciers. Variety is a distinctive feature also in the tourist destinations: from the lively and crowded Merano to the quiet and picturesque hamlets and valleys.
If you like walking, the surroundings of Merano offer countless beautiful trails and routes: the Alta Via di Merano, winding around the Tessa Group, the easy Tappeiner Promenade and the famous waalwege, paths along the old irrigation channels. Besides these, the nature reserves Parco Naturale Gruppo di Tessa and Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio feature many interesting trekking trails. If on the other side you are looking for a more relaxing holiday, Merano offers a state of the art spa center, one of the oldest in the Dolomites.
In the small ski centers you can practice all types of winter sports, and the Senales Glacier is open also for summer skiing.
