Nalles/Nals
Nalles, picturesque wine-growing town, lies in the sunny Etsch Valley, between Bolzano and Merano. It is the most southern town in Meraner Land and has a very mild climate. Thanks to its charming position and fascinating natural settings, Nals is a true paradise for excursionists and cyclists. Imposing strong holds and castles, estates and farmsteads rich in tradition nestled in extensive orchards and vineyards mark the landscape. Roses everywhere ..., it is no coincidence that Nalles is known as “the town of roses”! Both St. Ulrich's parish church, a Renaissance masterpiece, and St. Appolonia church at Siriano, a gem dating back to the 13th century, are worth a visit. The lovers of castles should not miss Castel Schwanburg - first mentioned in a document in 1286, it includes a series of buildings embellished with loggias and steps, which hide a splendid courtyard. Nowadays it is the seat of the oldest private winery in South Tyrol. Castle Stachelburg, instead, dates back to Renaissance and contains frescoes of the 16th century; now it is a historic winery, too. A wide array of sports complexes and leisure structures, along with the intact landscapes invite you to spend relaxing holidays, aimed at fitness. Several sport events take place: we just mention the "Cross-Country E1", a mountain bike race, and the horse-racing fair in spring; the international motorbike old timers race in May. To conclude, the gourmets will appreciate the well-known Asparagus Week Festival, from late April to late May, a good occasion to savour this delicious vegetable and the excellent local wines!
