Primo giorno: Nova Levante - sentiero del Masarè (Hirzl) - Rifugio Roda di Vael

Start at the large parking lot at Welschnofen (1156 m) next to the Tourism Bureau, where the buses are parked. We select the broad way, to the right of the Locherer Brook up to the lower Laurin I chairlift station. There, we cross the wooden bridge and go over the gravel path - now on the left side of the brook - until after about 1.5 km a narrow wooden bridge over the brook leads to a sharp left turn. We follow path No. 2T, which rapidly becomes steeper, to a turning point on the Heinzen Alm (1680 m), see signpost. From there we go across the Kölblegg meadows to the Gasthof Jolanda (crossing the Niger road).
Over an old military way - briefly before the inn to the left over the meadow - we go further to the Kolner Refuge (2339 m), which is listed on some maps as the Rosengarten refuge and/or as Rif. A. Fronza. Across the Hirzl Grade - trail No. 549 - we reach the foot of the western Rosengarten group. Below the Tscheinerspitze, it is possible to take either trail No. 552 to the Paolina Refuge (2125 m) or to continue up trail No. 549, the upper Hirzl Grade.
The latter is somewhat more exposed, but very well secured (pay attention in the event that the ground is wet). The two trails meet again at the Christomannos Memorial (2349 m). After about 2 km, the Masarè grade brings us to the Pederiva Refuge (2273 m) (no overnight accomodations available) and Rotwand Refuge (2283 m), the first night lodging with a wonderful view of the surrounding mountain world.
