San Candido/Innichen
Not far from the Austrian border, San Candido is one of the main tourist resorts in the Upper Badia Valley and offers excellent accommodation facilities. Its closeness to the Natural Park "Dolomiti di Sesto" and its enchanting alpine valleys, the opportunity to set out for excursions and trips to Austria, the wide and differentiated winter sport varieties, make it a center in continuous growth.
San Candido's religious buildings are certainly worth a visit. First of all the Cathedral, a remarkable Romanesque church renovated in the 12th century; then the Parish Church of San Michele, featuring a Baroque style even though its origins date back to the 13th century. Again: the Holy Sepulchre Church and the Altötting Chapel, built on the model of the Holy Sepulchre Church in Jerusalem in the second half of the 17th century and the Franciscan monastery (end of the 17th century).
In summer, there are plenty of excursions to set out for: to the lovely hamlet of Versciaco, to "Maso Mehlhof" along the slopes of the mount of San Candido, to San Candido Wells, where five springs of mineral waters can be employed in the treatment of various diseases. This itinerary also leads to the Rocca dei Baranci Refuge.
In winter, the ski area of San Candido belongs to the Upper Puster Valley Skiing District, which features over 50 km of ski runs and 30 skilifts. Many cross country tracks are available as well. They stretch into the Val Fiscalina and the Val di Anterselva, towards Cortina d’Ampezzo and Austria. Among the other winter sports: sledging, horse-drawn sledging and ice-skating.
