San Lorenzo di Sebato/St. Lorenzen

Only three kilometres far from Brunico/Bruneck, the village of San Lorenzo di Sebato, with its hamlets of Mantana, Onies, Elle, Costa, Ronchi, San Martino, Palù, Maria di Sares, Santo Stefano, Castel Badia, Fassine and Capolino, is considered the green gate of Val Pusteria.

As many archaeological sites testify, the area is particularly rich in history, thanks to its strategic position at the confluence of the rivers Rienza and Gadera, among Val Pusteria, Valle Isarco and Val Badia.
Indeed, till 15 B.C. the area was inhabited by the Raethis, who was eventually driven away by the Romans. This latter set here till the V century A.D., by the camp of "Sebatum". In the Middle Ages, then, the area towered by the two castles of San Michele and Sonnenburg, saw the battles of the counts of Pusteria against the lords of Lurn.

Nowadays the castle of Sonnenburg still keeps the ruins of the Benedictine monastery founded in the XI century, whereas a famous painting of the "Madonna" by Michael Pacher, dated 1462, is well kept in the parish church.

The lovers of sport can find here many itineraries and paths that, in summer, are ideal for excursions and walks.
In winter, on the contrary, the close ski area Plan de Corones, reachable also by a free ski bus service, makes San Lorenzo an excellent holiday resort for all the lovers of snowboard and alpine ski.
