Sesto/Sexten

People entering Sesto Valley from San Candido are welcomed by the Piccolo dei Tre Scarceri (Dreischusterspitze).

The valley extends for 15 km as far as Monte Croce Complico Pass, and then opens, under Mount Elmo, into a great number of mountain farms and huts. The oldest "maso" (mountain farm) of the valley rises at an altitude of 1660 m, on Monte Mezzo and is called Tschurtschenthalerhof.

Sesto and Moso, both at an altitude of about 1,300 m, together with other very small hamlets, represent the Municipality of Sesto.

We are immediately struck by the so-called Harpfen, huge drying racks for hay, which curiously remind of the ones used in Scandinavia to dry up cod-fish! Alpine architecture, visible in every corner, is enchanting, so that every three years the area is given the International Prize for Alpine Architecture. At Rudolf Stolz Museum, in the town centre, there are about 160 works by the painter, who is acknowledged among the greatest Tyrolese artists it is certainly worth a visit!

The pearl of Sesto is Val Fiscalina, a valley that can be reached with a nice trip on a sledge drawn by horses in winter, and by cart in summer: as a matter of fact, cars are not allowed in the valley.

In just three hours' time we can reach and admire the renowned Three Peaks of Lavaredo; every remark on them is totally superfluous. Meadows full of different flower species welcome us during the several walks, somewhat steep, towards Mount Casella di Fuori and di Dentro.

An ideal safeguarded climb to approach the world of rock climbing is that of Croda Rossa; we go on towards Rifugio Comici and then take the "Via degli Alpini" (Alpine way), route on "Cima Undici".

Sesto is the starting point of the yearly "Tre Cime Alpin Marathon " that takes place in September: the competitors pass by the Refuge "Pian di Cengia" and from there reach a tableland, where they can have a breathtaking view on the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Welcome in Sesto!
