Siusi - Seis
Siusi/Seis is situated at the foot of the Scìliar Plateau, in nice and sunny position, protected from the winds. The village was first mentioned in a document dating back to 982-987, in which the Bishops of Bressanone and Augsburg exchange some possessions. Later it is celebrated in the medieval poems by Oswald von Wolkenstein, one of the first lyric poets who wrote in German. Kings and other prestigious people, such as the King Friederick August from Sassony, Arturo Toscanini, Max Valzer, Sigurd Ibsen, and the Russian aristocracy used to spend their holidays here.
Nowadays Siusi has become a renowned tourist resort but at the same time remained a characteristic mountain village - the area is still dotted with "masi" (mountain huts), typical of the local mountain farming.
The historic centre is worth a visit: have a stroll and admire its artistic treasures, such as St.Valentino Church, with frescoes that date back to the late 14th century, and St.Vigilio Church, that keeps some brackets decorated with grotesque masks. Finally, visit the ruins of Castelvecchio, Oswald von Wolkenstein's ancient home.
Siusi is the ideal place for the lovers of quiet holidays, for those who love relax and uncontaminated landscapes - here they can discover nature with all senses. Sportsmen/women can choose among nice tennis and squash courts, miniature golf, riding grounds and a panoramic swimming pool, or try paragliding, go fishing and play skittles …
In summer, more than 350 km of paths and itineraries with different levels of difficulty, wind among the green of meadows and woods.
In winter on the contrary, snow turns the slopes into excellent ski runs where to practice alpine and Nordic skiing, served by the 24 modern lifts of the ski area Alpe di Siusi.
