Solda

Solda/Sulten is situated on the upper part of Val di Solda, surrounded by the highest peaks of Ortles (3905 m.), Zebrù (3740 m.) and Solda (3376 m.).
This place was already popular in the past - an Innsbruck magazine, in the remote 1802 described these places: "in the Tyrolean Siberia .... kids ride wolves and peasants eat along with bears …". In the past mountaineers used to meet here before and after their ascents on the famous Gran Zebrù. In the last years Solda gained the title "little winter paradise", offering its visitors breathtaking slopes in the homonymous skiarea. However, in spite of tourism, this little town saved its ancient traditions.
In summer the solemn peaks and uncontaminated nature become a fabulous background for innumerable hikes on panoramic trails.
Those who wish to immerse themselves in the local culture, should not miss the "Ortles Museum". It was founded in 1998 and contains several valuable objects of the Ortles area: a section is dedicated to the World War I, another intends to offer an overview of 100 years of tourism and illustrates the ascents of the most famous mountain-climbers. One more curiosity: the so-called "flea little house", i.e. an old hut situated near the Hotel Posta - here Reinhold Messner created "Alpe Curiosa", a museum of alpine curiosities dedicated to the mountain-climbing tradition.
