Tirolo/Dorf Tirol

The debate about the name Tirol, i.e. whether it comes from the village or from the close castle, Schloss Tirol, is dated back to the Middle Ages when cruel fights between the bishops and the noble families covered the valleys of the area with blood. In any case, Tirolo/Dorf Tirol is a true jewel which offers to its guests the charm and the mystery of an ancient history as well as the breathtaking beauty of extraordinary sceneries.

The history of the village goes back to the centuries, before the arrival of the Romans, even if the main documents are the twelfth-century ones, exactly starting from 1138, when the construction of the castle began, probably upon pre-existing ruins. From a strategic point of view, indeed, the castle lies upon one of the most important areas for the control of the valley.
The building consists of an imposing defensive tower, and next to it, the ruins of the residential building which collapsed in the XVI century, the official palace, the chapel and the current residential palace.
After that the Habsbourg obtained the control of the territory and the administrative and economic power moved to Innsbruck, the castle lost its importance and fell into abeyance.
Nowadays, after a òlong restoration, the castle houses the Historical and Cultural Museum of the Province.
In summer Tirolo is an excellent starting point for excursions to the mountains of the close Tessa/Texel Group, Or along the old irrigation canals, in German "Waalweg".
In winter, on the other hand, fun is guaranteed in the three great skiing areas of Merano 2000, Val Senales/Schnalstal - where skiing is practicable in summer too - and Val d'Ultimo/Schwemmalm.

In short, it is impossible to remain impassive in front of a similar mixture of history, culture and nature.
