Levico Terme
The city of Levico, facing the lake that goes by the same name, hidden among the green of the Valsugana mountain, is one of the most renowned nineteenth century spa town, known to international medicine for the therapeutic effects of its arsenical-ferruginous waters, unique in Italy.
Since the second half of the nineteenth century Levico, together with the other spa resorts of Vetriolo and Roncegno, became a favourite holiday destination for the European nobility. The Austro-Hungarian influences are still evident in the architecture, and the most beautiful example is the Grand Hotel delle Terme, in Liberty style, where the Habsburg used to spend their holidays. The Parco delle Terme, known for its lush green exotic plants, is one of the symbols of the town.
True architectural work of art is the St. Biagio Church of the thirteenth century, dedicated to Saint Biagio, martyr in the 316 AD. The frescoes inside the church are the results of works made between the fourteenth and the sixteenth century.
The Forte delle Benne, rising on the top of the hill by the same name, is what remains of the Austrian military base of the First World War. Built in the 1880, it became property of the municipality of Levico in 1933. The fortress can be reached from Levico taking the St. Biagio road and turning right at the crossroads going up a dirt track to Colle delle Benne.
Among the best preserved remains of the ancient roman road Via Claudia Augusta, important connection between the Latin and the Germanic worlds, is a sarcophagus made of chalky rock, decorated with bas-relief depicting ritual objects used during the pagan funerals. The sarcophagus is the only testimony of an important necropolis.
Levico doesn’t offer only thermal wellness, but also sports like fishing and canoeing; walks among the castles or at the discovery of tarns, forests and pastures: among the trekking trails, worth mentioning are the panoramic road of Monterovere and the panoramic road to Vetriolo.
