Rovereto, Vallagarina and the Brentonico Plateau
Breathe in the scent of vineyards from which excellent wines are produced, enjoy the fairytale atmosphere of the castles and admire the small artistic treasures hidden in the museums.
Vallagarina is the name given to the last section of the valley of the Adige River, between the village of Besenello, south of Trento, and Borghetto, on the border with the Pianura Padana. On the west rises the Brentonico Plateau, on the east the Small Dolomites.
Rovereto is the main center of Vallagarina: here you can visit monuments such as the Maria Dolens Bell and important museums like the Museo della Guerra (war museum) and the Mart, museum of modern and contemporary art, focus of the lively artistic and cultural scene of the town.
Near Rovereto you find the Cei Lake, with its many hiking trails, and two imposing strongholds, Beseno Castle and Noarna Castle, where the Nogaredo Witch Trials took place.
West of Vallagarina you find the so called “organic vegetable garden of Trentino”: the Val di Gresta valley, perfect if you love walking in the nature and enjoying good food; between Val di Gresta and Rovereto rises the village of Isera, famous for its Marzemino wine.
At the feet of the Pasubio and of the Small Dolomites lies Vallarsa, with the ruins of trenches and galleries from the First World War.
Between Rovereto and Riva del Garda rises Mori, another village famous for its wines: Cabernet and Merlot. Not far away you find the Brentonico Plateau, departure point of hikes to the Baldo Mountain, where you can admire some rare local plant species.
In the southernmost section of Vallagarina rises the hamlet of Ala, called the Velvet City for its long textile manufacturing tradition, the Lessini Mountains, favorite destination of mountain bikers and trekkers, and the village of Avio, famous for the Sabbionara Castle.
This area is perfect if you like going for long walks, practicing Nordic walking or going for a mountain bike tour: thanks to interesting theme routes like the Sentiero della Pace (peace trail) and the Wine and Flavors Routes of Trentino, you can learn a lot about the history and traditions of this ancient land.
In winter the ski area located on the Brentonico Plateau, Brentonicoski, is a favorite destination for all sports enthusiasts, who can also enjoy a wonderful view on the Small Dolomites and on Lake Garda.
If you love snowboarding you have at your disposal two terrain parks, but here you can practice also snowshoeing, sledding and ski mountaineering.
The 52 galleries trail is a wonderful route leading to some masterpieces of military engineering, allowing you to enjoy a journey between nature and history.
The trail starts from the historical military road of the 52 galleries (you can choose to start your hike from Xomo Pass or from Bocchetta Campiglia). Follow the galleries (make sure to have a good torch with you) and get to the “doors” of the Pasubio Mountain.
One of the biggest modern and contemporary art museums in Italy, Mart was founded in 1987, and nowadays it comprises three different museums: the main one in Rovereto, Palazzo delle Albere in Trento and Museo Fortunato Depero, in Rovereto. Welcoming every year thousands of visitors, it hosts a permanent exhibition of about 12,000 works.
The main museum in Rovereto was designed by architect Mario Botta, together with engineer Giulio Andreolli, and was opened on December 2002. The main building rises behind Palazzo dell’Annona and Palazzo Alberti, and the space between is covered by a corridor leading to a steel and glass dome.
