The valley, included in the nature reserves Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio and Parco Naturale Adamello Brenta, is surrounded by the imposing and charming mountains of the Adamello and Brenta Dolomites, of the Ortles- Cevedale group and of the Maddalene group. Even if you are in the mountains, here you can easily practice water sports, thanks to the many streams and lakes, where you find trout and Arctic chars. You can also practice rafting, hydrospeed, canoeing and kayaking in the Noce stream, famous worldwide thanks to the canoeing school Palestra Internazionale di Canoa Slalom. There is also a cycle track running along the stream.
Water in Val di Sole doesn’t mean only sport, but also wellness: the spa centers of Peio and Rabbi, besides being good for your health, are good also for your beauty, thanks to their special beauty treatments exploiting the beneficial properties of water.
In winter Val di Sole turns into a paradise for skiers, with the modern ski areas Folgarida-Marilleva, Peio, Tonale Pass, and with the Presena Glacier, where you can ski until late spring. The efficient shuttle service and the Dolomiti Express train, connecting Trento and Marilleva, take you easily to the slopes.
In the snowy valley of Val di Sole, fun is a guarantee: snowshoeing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, climbing, Nordic skiing. The winter playgrounds will be the joy of all children, and other sports you can practice are ice skating, hockey and broomball.
In summer Val di Sole offers countless hiking trails of different difficulty levels: high altitude tours on the glaciers or relaxing walks, Nordic walking trails or guided tours in the nature reserves. The best way to explore Val di Sole though is with your mountain bike, choosing among the 29 different routes. It’s not by chance that in 2008 the valley hosted the Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships.
Historical and cultural treasures are hidden in the museums, in the frescoed churches and in the castles of Val di Sole, like Caldes Castle and Ossana Castle. Ancient traditions survive in the shops of artisans and wood carvers; local products like the Melinda apple and the Casolet cheese enrich your meals. What more could you want?
The Strino lakes tour follows a hiking route up mountain slopes and along steep paths leading to the most beautiful sports of the Val di Sole valley and to the two nice lakes of Strino.
From the Tonale Pass, drive to the S.Bartolomeo hospice, where the dirt track to Malga Val Albiolo starts. After a small walk you reach the starting point of trail n.161 running along Alpe del Tonale, where you can admire a large variety of flowers.
The Ossana Castle, with its 25 meters square based keep, rises on a high rock spur in the Val di Sole valley, as proof of an ancient glory now protected and hidden behind its imposing walls.
